Poop Culture: Potty Training Your Child

Healthy Children: Poop Culture: Potty Training Your Child

The link above sends you to an article on WebMd that is a very nice overview of toilet training - history, theories, and methods. The author, Dr. Steven Parker, discusses the 'parent-centered' approaches such as The Potty Boot Camp and Toilet Training in Less than a Day as well as the 'child-centered' methods like Dr. Brazelton touted in a 1962 study.

Dr. Parker comes to a great conclusion: That no matter what the method, you child WILL eventually be potty trained. There is no proof you can every psychologically injure your child by choosing one method over another. It all comes down to what you think will work best for your family. If you want a slow, leisurely, and no-stress method, choose a 'child-centered' approach. If, on the other hand, you want to get the whole process done quickly you should consider one of the 'parent-centered' toilet training techniques.
