What To Do When Your child is Having an Excessive Number of Potty Training Accidents

Question:

I've been potty training my 24 month old son for a few days now. He is having some success going pee on the potty - but he is also going pee about 20 times per day! (He isn't drinking any more than normal.) Most of the time when he goes pee it is unfortunately NOT on the potty. I've tried having him clean up after himself when he has a mess, but he isn't bothered by having to take time away from playing to do the cleanup and he also doesn't seem to care if he is wearing soaking wet or smelly underwear!

Hearing that he doesn't much seem bothered by being wet or dirty, or by having to clean up his accidents, you might want to find some other "negative" stimulus that you can use. For some parents, having the child get into the shower/bath and rinsing down with cool water is a technique that works well. Of course you don't want it to feel like punishment, yet you also want to convey that accidents are undesirable.

He still going pee a lot even with a normal fluid intake. His bladder control might be slightly slower to develop than some kids - which isn't a problem. It just means that your potty training is likely to take weeks instead of days......and it is going to require a lot more trips to the toilet than average. (I know that isn't what you were hoping to hear!) Needless to say, though, as his bladder control develops, his skills will develop along with it and everything will just keep getting better and better. I would focus a LOT on not only rewarding for successes but also for having DRY pants. Do "dry pants" checks every half hour or so, and give a lot of praise or rewards for having kept his underwear clean and dry.
